Designer Rules of Thumb
General Clearance
Always maintain a minimum of 7 feet from the bottom of the fixture to the finished floor in any walkable space.
Dining Tables
Hang the fixture 30–36 inches above the tabletop. For vaulted rooms, err toward 34–36″ for visual balance.
Foyers & Entryways
For two-story or vaulted entries, position the bottom of the chandelier at ⅓ of the peak height from the floor — typically 8–9 ft.
Visual Weight & Vaults
Vaulted ceilings create an illusion of height. Lower slightly from what feels natural — the fixture should feel anchored, not floating.
Fixture Size Tip
Add the room's length + width in feet; that total in inches ≈ the ideal chandelier diameter. For vaulted rooms, go ½ size up.
Stairwells
Maintain 7 ft clearance above the tallest step. Measure from the top step to the ceiling to determine your maximum drop.
